From Clove to Bulb — A No-Nonsense Guide to Growing Garlic with Organic Fertilizers

Garlic is one of those crops that's easy to grow, but hard to grow well. Sure, you can stick a clove in the ground and something will come up. But if you want big, plump bulbs that store for months without sprouting? That takes a little more know-how.

After years of growing garlic, I've boiled it down to one simple truth: your garlic is only as good as what you feed it.

So here's our down-to-earth, step-by-step guide to growing garlic with organic fertilizers. No jargon, no fluff — just practical advice that works.

Step 1: Start with the Soil — Get This Right and You're Halfway There

Garlic loves loose, fertile soil — sandy loam is ideal, with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5. A week or two before planting, get your ground prepped and your base fertilizer in.

We recommend Organic NPK (9-4-6 or 10-3-5) at about 1,200–1,800 kg per hectare (roughly 1,070–1,600 lbs per acre), spread evenly and worked into the top 20–25 cm (8–10 inches) of soil.

Why organic instead of synthetic? Garlic has shallow roots, and chemical fertilizers can easily burn them. Plus, over time, synthetics make the soil hard and lifeless. Organic fertilizers release nutrients slowly, build soil health, and give you better garlic season after season.

Step 2: Planting — Give Each Clove a Head Start

Before planting, break your garlic heads into individual cloves. Pick the biggest, plumpest ones — they'll give you the best bulbs. Let them air-dry for a day or two; it helps them sprout faster.

Plant each clove pointy side up, root side down, about 3–5 cm (1.5–2 inches) deep. Space rows 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) apart, with 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) between cloves.

Once they're in the ground, water them in well — and here's the trick: mix in some Liquid Organic Nitrogen Fertilizer at 1:300–1:500 dilution. Think of it as a "welcome drink" for your garlic. It gets the roots going fast, gives you even emergence, and sets the plants up for strong growth right from the start.

Step 3: Winter Is Coming — Don't Let Your Garlic Freeze Out

If you're planting in the fall (which most growers do), your garlic will spend the winter in the ground. Garlic can handle temperatures down to about -5°C (23°F), but a little extra nutrition goes a long way in helping it survive the cold.

Before the ground freezes, give it a top-dressing of Organic Potassium Fertilizer at 300–450 kg per hectare (roughly 270–400 lbs per acre). Potassium thickens cell walls and boosts frost resistance — meaning fewer dead plants come spring.

Step 4: Spring Green-Up — This Is Your Make-or-Break Window

When the weather warms up in spring, garlic takes off like a rocket. This is the single most important time to fertilize — miss this window, and you can't make it up later.

Hit it with a high-nitrogen fertilizer: Organic Nitrogen 15-0-0 or Organic NPK 10-3-5, at 450–750 kg per hectare (roughly 400–670 lbs per acre). Nitrogen fuels leaf growth — and the bigger, greener, thicker your leaves, the more photosynthesis happens, which directly translates into bigger bulbs at harvest.

For an extra boost, spray Amino Acid Powder (diluted 1:800–1:000) on the leaves every couple of weeks. It gets absorbed straight through the foliage, giving your plants a quick pick-me-up.

Step 5: Bulb Swelling — The Final Push

By late April or May, the garlic scapes have emerged, and all the plant's energy is going into fattening up that bulb. At this stage, nitrogen takes a back seat — phosphorus and potassium are the stars of the show.

Switch to Organic NPK 6-6-16 (higher phosphorus and potassium), or use a combination of Organic Phosphorus Fertilizer and Organic Potassium Fertilizer at 450–750 kg per hectare (roughly 400–670 lbs per acre).

Potassium is the secret weapon for big bulbs — it gives you firm, heavy, tight bulbs that store beautifully. Skimp on potassium, and you'll end up with loose, soft bulbs that sprout way too soon.

Step 6: Harvest — The Proof Is in the Bulb

Harvest time is when the lower leaves start to yellow but the upper ones are still green — usually about 28–32 weeks after planting. Pull them up and let them cure in a dry, airy spot for 2–3 weeks until the outer skins are papery and dry. Then clip off the tops and roots, and they're ready to store.

The difference with organically grown garlic? You can see it, feel it, and taste it. The bulbs are denser, the skins are tighter, the flavor is richer, and they keep for months. That's what balanced organic nutrition does — it gives the plant everything it needs to pack in those dry solids and flavor compounds.
